John Bateman is a shareholder in the Philadelphia office of Lavin, Cedrone, Graver, Boyd & DiSipio. He is lead trial and appellate counsel for automotive, industrial, recreational and consumer product manufacturers in product liability, and commercial cases as well as general negligence matters..
Mr. Bateman has defended and handled trials and appeals before courts in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts and has litigated cases in over 20 states. In particular, Mr. Bateman has defended the manufacturers of trucks, aerial lift devices, automobiles, electrical components, motor coaches, and other industrial and consumer products. Mr. Bateman also defends toxic tort claims in multiple jurisdictions. He recently argued and prevailed in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on issues pertaining to the adequacy of expert testimony and disclosure.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in Politics and Government from the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut. He earned his Juris Doctor from the Temple University School of Law in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Middle Districts of Pennsylvania and the District of Massachusetts and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Before joining the Lavin firm, Mr. Bateman was associated with the Boston, Massachusetts firm of Campbell, Conroy & O’Neil (1988-1990). He is a graduate of the International Association of Defense Counsel Trial Academy (2001, University of Colorado at Boulder). He served on the faculty of 2014 International Association of Defense Counsel Trial Academy at Stanford Law School and he has served as an adjunct faculty member at St. Joseph’s University.
He was also the recipient of the 2017 Lt. Travis Manion Memorial Award for Career Achievement from the Philadelphia Catholic League Wrestling Association. He is a proud graduate of Archbishop Wood High School.
Mr. Bateman is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel and the Pennsylvania Defense Institute.
He resides with his wife and three children in Media, Pennsylvania and is a parishioner at St. Mary Magdalen.
